What's New @ Wool for Ewe

Kim Hargreaves Touching Elegance

To celebrate our move to 83-85 Rosemount Place, we're having a Grand Opening Extravaganza on Sunday, September 12 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Join us for Fashion Shows of Kim Hargreaves' latest designs, including garments from her newest book Touching Elegance, styled by Rosehip & Tutu; try on the garments so you can decide which one to knit; preview the new Autumn wools and patterns; have a chance to win a £75 Grand Prize Hamper or one of the many door prizes; receive 10% off all Debbie Bliss, Rowan, Noro and Sublime wools purchased on the day; and enjoy complimentary refreshments. Tickets for this special event cost £5.00 per person and must be purchased in advance, either in the shop, by phone or online.

Remember Lopi sweaters with their traditionally patterned yokes and borders? They're back. Nine natural shades of 100% wool Alafoss Lopi, spun in Iceland, have arrived along with classic patterns for men, women and children. Lopi sweaters are knitted on larger circular needles in the round which means they grow quickly and there's hardly any sewing up! Each 100g ball of chunky Alafoss Lopi measures approximately 100 metres (109 yards) and costs £4.99. If you're addicted to making felted bags, Lopi wool will also felt beautifully.

We've just unpacked eight colourways of Opal Hundertwasser II sock wool, which knits up into exubert "freeform" stripes in colors based on paintings by renowned Austrian artist and sculptor Friedenreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000). Hundertwasser rejected the straight line and embraced bold color, organic forms and humans in harmony with nature. Made of 75% superwash wool and 25% polyamide, each 100-gram ball contains approximately 465 yards and costs £8.99.

We’re very excited about the arrival of the new Artesano Superwash Merino DK, a wonderfully soft machine- washable wool that has excellent stitch definition. With a tension of 22 stitches to 30 rows on 4.0 mm (UK8) needles, it’s a great choice for double-knitting patterns, including baby garments. Each 50g ball is 100% merino, approximately 112 metres and costs £3.69. The colours range from pale pastels for babies to cheerful brights for grownup garments and plenty in between. Manos del Uruguay's new Lace 2-ply yarn is now in stock. It comes in 8 gorgeous kettle-dyed colourways (with two more on the way) as well as ivory and black. This sumptuously soft yarn is made of 70% baby alpaca, 25% silk, 5% cashmere, which means you won’t be able to stop touching it.  Each 50g skein is approximately 439 yards (400 metres) and costs £11.99. One skein will make an elegant lace scarf and we have plenty of Artesano  patterns to choose from including the elegant lace cowl shown on the left, which takes 2 skeins.

KnitPro/spectrachunky.jpg

We love KnitPro needles and crochet hooks. As well as Symphonie Wood and Nova Metal interchangeable and fixed circulars, straight and double-pointed needles, we also have the new bright pink Spectra Flair needles in stock. These lightweight, slightly flexible acrylic needles are available in starter, deluxe and chunky interchangeable circular needle kits and as 35 cm straight needles. Need an excuse to add Spectra Flairs to your collection? They have the same sharp points and flexible cables as other KnitPro needles, they feel great in your hands, their colour makes you smile and they're perfect for travel knitting! For crocheters we stock KnitPro's Symphonie Wood regular, double-ended and Tunisian crochet hooks. Click here to see the KnitPro range we stock.

Wool for Ewe recommends Eucalan no-rinse wash for handknits and other delicate garments. Eucalan contains lanolin, which is a natural conditioner and dust mite repellent, comes in four scents (natural, eucalyptus, lavender and grapefruit) and two sizes: 100 ml (£3.95) and 500 ml (£10.95). To use, add one teaspoon (5 ml) per gallon of tepid water, submerge your garment and gently squeeze to remove dirt, leave to soak for 15 minutes or more, and then drain water. Do not rinse. Gently roll your garment in a clean towel to remove excess water and then dry flat.

Sock knitting fans will love Schoppell Wolle Zauberballs, which combine whimsically named vivid colour combinations (the colourway shown on the right is called Tropical Fish) with long colour repeats and a very soft hand. Each 100-gram ball (75% wool and 25%) is 420 metres and costs £9.99.
