What's New @ Wool for Ewe

Wool for Ewe is moving down the street to 83-85 Rosemount Place (formerly Victoria Wine), which is right next door to the Richmond Deli. (Their great coffee and book exchange will keep non-knitting companions happy while you browse). Our last day at 241 Rosemount Place will be Saturday, June 26 and our new shop will open on Monday, July 5. That’s right: we’ll be open on Mondays after we move. We’re very excited about having more space to display all of our wools and accessories as well as a spacious workshop area, which means we will be offering workshops during the day as well as our regular Tuesday evenings slot. Our Late Summer/Autumn Workshop Schedule is now online.

Manos del Uruguay's new Lace 2-ply yarn is now in stock. It comes in 8 gorgeous kettle-dyed colourways (with two more on the way) as well as ivory and black. This sumptuously soft yarn is made of 70% baby alpaca, 25% silk, 5% cashmere, which means you won’t be able to stop touching it.  Each 50g skein is approximately 439 yards (400 metres) and costs £11.99. One skein will make an elegant lace scarf and we have plenty of Artesano  patterns to choose from including the elegant lace cowl shown on the left, which takes 2 skeins.

Just in from Noro is Taiyo, a blend of 40% cotton, 30% silk, 15% wool and 15% nylon in the vibrant colour combinations Noro is known for. Taiyo knits up at 16 stitches to 4 inches/10 cm on 5.5 mm (UK5) needles, comes in 8 colours, and costs £14.75 for a 100g (200 m) ball. Spring and summer designs for women, including several cardigans, a waistcoat, a shrug, a vest and a tote bag can be found in the latest pattern book, Noro Joy, and also in Noro Flowers.

MirasolBook12.jpg

Two new arrivals from the Mirasol Project are perfect for spring and summer knitting and crochet. Wachi, a blend of 85% cotton and 15% silk, knits up at 20 sts to 4 inches on 4 mm (UK8) needles and is available in 4 jewel-tone colours. Lachiwa, 60% cotton and 40% linen, knits to a standard DK tension of 22 stitches to 4 inches on 3.75 mm (UK9) needles and is also available in 4 colours. Both yarns cost £4.95 per 50g hank and pattern support is available in Jane Ellison’s Books 11 and 12 for the Mirasol Project, each £5.50. When you buy these yarns, you are helping improve the lives of disadvantaged children in the Peruvian highlands.

Two new yarns have joined the Debbie Bliss collection. Amalfi is a delicious warm weather blend of 70% cotton, 15% viscose, 10% linen and 5% silk available in 6 shades. Eucalan.jpg
Wool for Ewe recommends Eucalan no-rinse wash for handknits and other delicate garments. Eucalan contains lanolin, which is a natural conditioner and dust mite repellent, comes in four scents (natural, eucalyptus, lavender and grapefruit) and two sizes: 100 ml (£3.95) and 500 ml (£10.95). To use, add one teaspoon (5 ml) per gallon of tepid water, submerge your garment and gently squeeze to remove dirt, leave to soak for 15 minutes or more, and then drain water. Do not rinse. Gently roll your garment in a clean towel to remove excess water and then dry flat.

Sock knitting fans will love Schoppell Wolle Zauberballs, which combine whimsically named vivid colour combinations (the colourway shown on the right is called Tropical Fish) with long colour repeats and a very soft hand. Each 100-gram ball (75% wool and 25%) is 420 metres and costs £9.99. Best of all, Zauberballs are not just for knitting socks: they make beautiful tank tops, scarves and anything else that calls for 4-ply.

We love the vibrant colours and softness of Manos del Urugay's Lace (2-Ply), Silk Blend (DK) and Wool Clasica (chunky weight) yarns. Now there's an even better reason to choose this wool for your next project. Manos del Uruguay has been admitted as a full member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO ), recognizing their commitment to improving the lives of women in rural Uruguay. Manos Del Uruguay was founded by a group of women in 1968 to provide jobs for women in their own communities by producing handicrafts using traditional methods. More than 40 years later, 17 Manos del Uruguay co-operatives spin, dye, knit and produce finished garments for sale throughout the world.

We are very excited about the arrival of Rennie Handknits Supersoft Cashmere DK in 6 colours. Made of 87.5% lambswool and 12.5% lambswool, each 50g ball retails for £4.25 and can be used in any pattern that calls for DK tension of 22 sts to 10cm/4 inches on 4.0 mm needles. Supersoft Cashmere DK joins our expanding range of Scottish wools, including Rennie Handknits ChunkyAran, Unique Shetland 4-ply and Supersoft Cashmere 4-Ply, all spun locally in Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire.
