Winter 2010 Workshop Schedule

Introduction to Fair Isle and Intarsia Knitting
Tuesday, March 16 & Tuesday, March 23                                                                          6:00  – 8:00 pm
£30 per person
If you admire traditional Fair Isle knitting and would like add colourwork to your knitting repertoire, this workshop is for you. Using two colours of yarn at a time, Fair Isle knitting creates repetitive patterns by carrying the yarn not in use on the wrong side. Intarsia is used to add bigger blocks of colour or motifs in multiple colours, twisting the new colour around the old each time a colour is changed. By knitting patterned coasters, you will learn how to read Fair Isle and intarsia charts and add different colours without puckering or creating holes in your knitting.

Learn to Knit
Wednesday, March 17 & Wednesday, March 24                                                                   6:00 – 8:00 pm
£40 per person
If you have always wanted to learn to knit (or would like to refresh what you learned way back in school), join us for this fun beginner class. Instead of working on a scarf project that takes forever to finish, we will make fingerless gloves using chunky wool. You will learn to cast on, knit, purl, decrease, cast off  and sew up. And we promise you’ll soon be knitting and chatting at the same time! Plan to arrive early for the first class so you can pick out your yarn and needles. Please note: tuition for this class includes a copy of The Knitter's Handbook.

Learn to Crochet
Tuesday, March 30 & Tuesday, April 6                                                                   6:00 – 8:00 pm
£40 per person
This workshop is back by popular demand and fills up very quickly! You will learn how to hold the crochet hook and yarn, make chains, work three very useful crochet stitches, double, half-treble and treble crochet and increase and decrease. You will make a dishcloth or soap cosy in the class and develop the confidence to read patterns, tackle more complicated projects and continue to build your skills. The workshop includes a copy of the how-to-guide Crochet Unraveled.

Sock Clinic
Tuesday, April 20 & Tuesday, April 27                                                                          6:00 – 8:00 pm
£45 per person

Fascinated by colourful sock wool but intimidated by double-pointed needles? This workshop is a hands-on introduction to the highly addictive world of sock knitting. You will learn how to knit in the round, how to shape the heel flap and turn the heel (it’s not as hard as it sounds), and how to graft the toe. By the end of the workshop, you will have completed one baby sock and be well on your way (if not finished) with its mate. Plan to arrive early for the first class so you can pick out your sock wool!  Please note: tuition for this course includes a copy of the how-to-guide and reference book Getting Started Knitting Socks.

Finishing School
Tuesday, May 4 & Tuesday, May 11                                                                          6:00  – 8:00 pm
£40 per person
Do you love to knit but drag your feet when it comes to sewing up your projects? Or would you like your finished garments to look more professional? If so, this 2-part workshop is for you. We’ll learn to pick up stitches for collars and button bands, sew seams invisibly using the mattress stitch, fit in sleeves, join shoulder seams without sewing up, make buttonholes and lots more. There will be a small amount of knitting homework to complete before the first class. Plus, you will need to bring a project with you that needs finishing. Please note: tuition for this course includes a copy of the reference book Finishing Techniques for Handknitters.
